Pansies’ velvety textures and friendly little faces make them one of the best-loved garden flowers, providing colour all year round.
Perhaps the pansy’s place in our affections comes from its long association with lovers. The word pansy comes from the French pensees, meaning ‘thoughts’. The charming flowers both of pan-sies and of their close relatives, violas, were said to turn a person’s thoughts to their loved one. Their old English name, heartsease, symbolized the peace and rest that came to the hearts of lovers who died of love.
Yet, in stark contrast to this romantically melancholy image of tormented sweethearts, the pansy itself is essentially a cheerful plant. Not only does it present a bright and breezy countenance to the world, but it is amenable and obliging by nature too.
Pansies are simple to grow from seed and will put up with almost any soil. They are also very easy to obtain as bedding plants. Garden centres always carry a thorough selection and most little local stores such as greengrocers, florists and even pet shops often offer trays of pansies for sale.
There are a host of varieties available, in almost every colour. Most varieties have at least two contrasting shades. In some cases this is a fringe around the petals; others have ‘faces’ of another colour at their centres.
If you browse through catalogues or the seed racks at your local garden centre, you will discover varieties of pansies for every season and, with care and a mild winter, you could have a colourful display all year round.
Winter pansies to brighten up your garden
Winter can be a very dull time in your garden. This is especially true if your space is limited to a small patch, a balcony or a window box or two. There is simply no room for the shrubs, trees and heathers that provide most of the winter interest in larger gardens.
The ever-obliging pansy can brighten up the winter gloom. ‘Winter Smiles’ and ‘Forerunner Mixed’ are two colourful varieties which will flower from autumn through to early spring in mild winters.
The ‘Universal’ F1 hybrid varieties are also winter flowering and come in selections of colours and types. The multi-coloured ‘Delft’, for example, has flowers that are lemon, cream, purple, white and mid-night black, while ‘Beacons-field’ is a beautiful royal pur-ple shading to lilac, with light blue upper petals.
The unromantic sounding ‘White Blotch’ is a neat, com-pact plant, pure white with a deep violet blue face or ‘blotch’. There is also a ‘Blue Blotch’, whose petals are a deep, rich blue tinged with purple. It has a distinctive velvet blue face.
If you prefer flowers in all one colour, without a face, the self-coloured varieties are for you. Amongst the winter flowerers there is ‘True Blue’, which is a clear mid-blue and has rather fetching whiskers. Other single-coloured varie-ties include a pure white and a wonderful apricot.
For smaller winter flowering plants choose ‘Floral Dance’, which will give you a lovely mixture of blooms. To ensure that there is no gap in flowering between the winter and summer varieties, plant some earlies. ‘Eclipse’ is one such variety, beginning its flowering very early in the season and finishing at the end of the summer. Another possible choice is ‘Supremo’, which offers yellow, bronze, red, rose. Purple and white in its colour combinations. It has very large flowers. ‘Ruffled Earlies’, as their name suggests, have ruffled edges and flower in early spring. To add to their charms, they may sometimes have contrasting borders, veins, stripes or blotches.

The advanced lawn mower repair involves the repairing of the faulty carburetor, which can trigger several symptoms, which include the engine starting and failing, sagging and running on choke among others. The repair process depends with the type of the carburetor, which ranges from bowl to diaphragm carburetors. The diaphragm carburetors are less susceptible to problems and mostly act as the fuel pump or auto choke. In the lawn mower repair, the first part to replace is the bowl carburetor, which is made of rubber and hardens over time making it inflexible.
The other feature of bowl carburetors that requires checking is the pick up tubes, which might experience blockage. It is also important to ensure the balls in the pick-up tubes move freely and the water tank hold adequate water. In repairing, it is ideal to check the manufacture manual and repair kit before embarking on the repairing process. This is because the manual offers different specifications of the carburetor.

I know that my aunt is working too hard trying to grow fresh food at home, and trying to balance a full time job at a retail store. I keep on trying to figure out ways to try and free up her time, and I thought it might make sense to do some gardening research, to find ways that might help her to save time tending to her backyard garden. I was at Barnes and Noble, and found a couple of “how to aquaponics” books, that outline this interesting technique for growing and harvesting organics at home. I think that it would be so great if she didn’t have to spend several hours a day clipping the plants, tilling the soil, and feeding the plants by placing fertilizer in the soil. She literally spends an hour just watering her plants, and then she occasionally has the water spillage to deal with. This occurs if you add too much water to the soil to the point where it can hold no more, and it starts leaking outside of the trays that the plants are in.

Termites are some of the most common household pests, responsible for billions of thousands of dollars in damage across the country. Termites usually enter homes in the early spring (March to April) where they create tunnels and nests and make themselves comfortable in your home. While termite prevention is fairly straightforward and do-it-yourself, termite control is something that should be left to professionals. Professional exterminators are able to spot structural damage and identify where the termites are colonizing. Proper treatment requires gallons of a potent termiticide, which is then injected into the ground along the outside of the home and even into the foundation itself. The exterminator can locate and pinpoint exact points of interest, helping you to close it up and prevent another infestation. Companies should be licensed by the Department of Agriculture or a member of the National Pest Management Association. Being registered and licensed assures you they are properly trained and accredited in the correct treatment and prevention of termite infestations.
