Lightening Up a Stuffy Space

November 23rd, 2011

Last year, my wife Marie and I bought a foreclosed house in a nice neighborhood that we had been looking at dreamily for a number of years. The place was in great shape, had all its appliances, and even came with some nice furniture. There was just one problem–the decoration in the main room was incredibly Victorian. It had stuffy wooden walls, grandiose chandeliers–the works. We knew we had to do something, so we got into DIY stuff, refinishing the walls and laying some nice honey-colored wood flooring. We also knew we had to deal with the lights. We wanted contemporary lighting fixtures, perhaps track lighting or recessed lights, or maybe something funkier, some really modernistic design. We ultimately went with a lovely contemporary fixture with metal accents that we think pulls the room together quite nicely. And with that, our formerly stuffy living room now had the clean lines of home sweet home.
